Vimpelin lankaa / Local yarn from Vimpeli

Sain syntymäpäivälahjaksi kotikonnuilta Herralan tilan suomenlampaan villaa nylonilla vahvistettuna upeissa luonnonväreissä. Hyvän tuntuista lankaa. Sitten kun sukkainspiraatio iskee, nämä langat menevät puikoille heti!

For my birthday, I got some yarn from my home town. The Herrala farm sock yarn is made of Finnsheep wool and nylon. The natural colours are great, and the yarn has a good feel. Next time I get inspiration to knit socks, this will be the yarn of choice!

Thingborg

Yksi islannin-reissumme kohokohdista oli mielestäni vierailu Thingborgin naisten käsityöosuuskunnan kauppaan lähellä Selfossia. Olin monesta paikasta lukenut, että he tekevät koko Islannin pehmeintä hahtuvalankaa eli thingborgarlopia. Odotin ihania lankoja, mutta en ollut varautunut siihen, että kauppa olisi täynnä toinen toistaan upeampia käsinkudottuja villapaitoja, jonka kaltaisia ei löydy muualta Islannista. Pidin erityisesti siitä, että Thingborgin naiset ammentavat perinteisistä villapaitakuvioista inspiraatiota uusiin villapaitamalleihin. Osa Thingborgin malleista on kirjoitettu ylös neuleohjeeksi, mutta kuulemma yksi heidän villapaidanneulojistaan keksii mallit neuloessaan, eikä yksikään hänen tekemänsä paita ole samanlainen. One of the highlights of our Iceland trip was a visit to the Thingborg women's handicraft cooperative near Selfoss. I had read from several places that they make the softest unspun Icelandic ('thingborgarlopi') in the entire Iceland, so I was excited. I expected to find wonderful yarn, but I was not prepared for the amazing and unique hand-knitted sweaters, one more beautiful than the other. I especially liked the way how the Thingborg ladies use the traditional Icelandic patterns as inspiration for new sweater patterns. They document some of their designs - but apparently one of their knitters comes up with the pattern for the sweater as she knits, and no one sweater made by her is the same. Plötulopin lisäksi ostin Thingborgin neuleohjekirjan nimeltään Lopalist - siinä on todella kivoja neulemalleja (islanniksi).

In addition to unspun Icelandic, I bought a Thinborg knitting pattern book called Lopalist - it has really nice knitting patterns (in Icelandic).

Taas Islannissa / Iceland Revisited

Olen Islanti-fani, ja Islanti näkyy paljon blogissani sekä neuleissani. Kun mietimme lomasuunnitelmia, ehdotan ensimmäiseksi matkaa Islantiin. Nyt sain miehenkin ylipuhuttua, joten vietimme vajaat kaksi viikkoa Islannissa elokuun lopussa. Sisällytin matkasuunnitelmaan muutaman käsitöihin liittyvän paikan, kuten Álafossin villakaupan (Ístexin tehtaanmyymälä) Mossfellsbaerissä, Thingborgin käsityöosuuskunnan kaupan Selfossissa, Islannin käsinneulojien yhdistyksen kaupan(Handknitting Association of Iceland) Reykjavíkissä ja Haáfellin islanninvuohitilan Borgarnesin lähellä.

It might be clear from my postings and knitting that I am an Iceland fan :) So when it comes to planning of holidays, my first answer is "Iceland". Now I managed to sell the idea to husby, so we spent some twelve days in Iceland in the end of August. I included a couple of knitting-related places in the itinary, such as the Álafoss wool store (Ístex factory store) at Mossfellsbaer, Thingborg cooperative wool shop at Selfoss, the Handknitting Association of Iceland shop at Reykjavík and the Icelandic goat farm of Haáfell near Borgarnes.

Olemme käyneet aiemminkin Haáfellin vuohitilalla - se on loistava vierailukohde! Nyt meillä oli mukanamme parivuotias, joka ihastui kuvassa näkyvään Totti-kiliin. Meidän olisi kuulemma pitänyt ottaa Totti mukaan kotiin. Valitettavasti vuohitila on vaikeissa talousvaikeuksissa. Tilan konkurssin (ja islanninvuohien sukupuuton) ehkäisemiseksi on menossa joukkorahoituskeräys.

We have visited the Haáfell goat farm before and loved it. This time, we had a two-year-old with us, who fell in love with this little goat, Totti. Apparently Totti should have come home with us. Unfortunately the goat farm is in quite deep financial trouble. There is a crowd funding initiative to keep it afloat - and to retain the population of the Icelandic goat.

Mykistyin taas villan ja langan määrästä Álafossin villakaupassa. Tuijotin lankoja noin kymmenen minuuttia ennen kuin osasin päättää mitä halusin. Ostin *vain* 3,8 kiloa plötulopia eli hahtuvalankaa. :)

Again I got astounded at the amount of yarn at Álafoss. I stared at the yarn for some ten minutes before I was able to figure out what I actually wanted. I *only* got 3,8 kilos of plötulolpi (unspun Icelandic) :)

Lankapommitus näyttää olevan suosittu harrastus Islannissa - nämä olivat suosikkini. Aita löytyy Stokkseyristä, pöytä ja tuoli Keflavíkista.

It seems to be quite popular to yarn bomb in Iceland - these ones were my particular favourites. The fence is in Stokkseyri and the table and chair in Keflavík.

Gudrún Bjarnadóttirin luonnoväreillä värjätty Hespa-lanka oli reissun uusi tuttavuus. Gudrun on islannin maatalousyliopiston kasviopin opettaja, joka järjestää myös kotonaan Borgarnesin lähellä kasvivärjäyskursseja tilauksesta. Se kurssi on jo toivelistalla seuraavalle Islannin-matkalle :) ´

During the trip I saw in a few places selling the fantastic naturally dyed Hespa yarn by Gudrún Bjarnadóttir. Gudrun teaches botany at the Icelandic Agricultural University, and she sometimes also organises on-demand courses on natural dyeing. I would so love to learn from her!

Visby

During our quick trip to Gotland, I got to see a Gotland sheep - as a concrete traffic barrier in Visby!

Marimekon tehdaskierros / Marimekko factory tour

Pääsin tänään Unikon sydämeen eli ilmaiselle tehdaskierrokselle Marimekon tehtaalle Herttoniemeen :) Oli tosi mielenkiintoista nähdä kankaanpainantaa ja tuotantoprosessia sekä ensi syksyn kuoseja. Tehtaalla on hauskoja paikkoja kuten värikeittiö ja reseptiarkisto (väreille). Niin, ja kankaanpainokoneet on nimetty painojohtajien mukaan. Tehdaskierroksella ei saanut ottaa kuvia, tässä pari kuvaa Marikylän aulasta. Marikylän muut mielenkiintoiset asiat ovat tehtaanmyymälä sekä ruokala Maritori, jossa kaikki koristeet ovat Marimekkoa ja jossa myös Marimekkoon pukeutuneet suunnittelijat ruokailevat.

I visited Marimekko factory today in Herttoniemi, Helsinki, on a free factory tour. It was very interesting to see how the fabrics are printed - as well as to get a sneak preview of the autumn designs. There are funny places at the factory, such as colour kitchen and recipe archive (for colours). Ah, and the printing machines are named after the printing directors. It was not allowed to take pictures in the factory, here are a couple of pictures from the entrance to Marimekko Village. Other attractions in the Marimekko Village are the factory shop and the mensa Maritori (where all decorations are Marimekko and the Marimekko-clad designers also eat).

Mezőkövesd, Unkari / Hungary

Unkarin-vierailulla vietimme muutaman päivän Egerissä. Samalla reissulla kävimme Mezőkövesdin pikkukaupungissa (15 km Egeristä), joka on kuuluisa Matyó-kirjonnasta. Kaupungissa on Hadas-käsityöläiskortteli, jossa on sekä käsityöläisten pajoja että pieniä museoita. Mezőkövesdissä on myös Matyó-museo, josta löytyy Matyó-kirjailtuja vaatteita ja koristeltuja huonekaluja sekä valokuvia Matyó-kansasta.

During our trip to Hungary, we spent a couple of days in Eger. We visited the small town of Mezőkövesd (15 km from Eger), which is famous for Matyó embroidery. The town has a handicraft quarter called Hadas district, which has handicraft workshops and small house museums. There is also a Matyó museum in Mezőkövesd. The museum has a good collection of Matyó-embroided clothes and painted furniture, as well as pictures of Matyó people.

Lontoo / London

Muutaman päivän Lontoon-reissulla ehti lankakauppojakin ihastelemaan. I Knit Thamesin etelärannalla, London Eyen takana, on mukavan kotoinen lankapuoti, jossa on puoli seinällistä neulekirjallisuuttakin sekä neulehengailuun houkutteleva sohva. Heidän omat lankansa olivat varsin ihastuttavia, varsinkin silkki-kamelinkarvalanka. Kun en osannut päättää mitä haluan, päädyin vain hypistelemään enkä ostanut mitään. Oho!

Loop, joka on tunnelmallisella sivukujalla Angelin metroaseman lähellä, on pieni charmantti lankapuoti. Ehdin paikalle pari minuuttia ennen sulkemisaikaa, joten kuvat jäivät ottamatta.

During a couple of days' visit in London I managed to drop by in a couple of yarn shops, too. I Knit on South Bank, behind the London Eye, is a nice and cosy yarn shop. They have half a wall full of knitting books and a sofa that calls you to sit down and take out your knitting. Their own yarns are quite lovely, especially the lace-weight silk-camel blend. As I could not decide what I want, I did not buy anything. Wow!

Loop, which is located in an atmospheric alley way near Angel tube station, is a small and charming yarn shop. I got there a couple of minutes before closign time, so I did not manage to take pictures.
