Raitasukkia / Stripy socks

Jämälankaoperaatio jatkuu. Kaapin perukoilta löytyi parisenkymmentä 15 gramman nöttöstä Pirtin Kehräämön sukkalankaa, jota olin käyttänyt värjäyskokeiluissani (niistä postaukset täällä ja täällä). Ne muuntautuivat kolmeksi jännittävännäköiseksi sukkapariksi :D

My stash busting operation continues. The twenty-one 15-gram skeins of Finnsheep sock yarn from Pirtin Kehräämö I practiced natural dyeing with (earlier posts here and here) turned into three pairs of socks. The socks sure do look original :D

Virkattu päiväpeitto / Crocheted bed cover

Taas yksi jämälankapeitto, johon piti ostaa lisää lankaa (koska peittoon ei kuulemma saanut käyttää poikien värejä) :D No, onneksi lankaa on nyt nettomääräisesti vähemmän kuin aloitettaessa...

Päiväpeittoon meni noin 800 grammaa Novita Miamia kahdeksassa eri värissä. 13*13 cm virkattuja neliöitä meni peittoon yhteensä 70.

Another stash busting blanket - for which I had to get some extra yarn as I was told not to use boy colours :D Well, luckily the net amount of yarn is less than when I started crocheting this one...

I used about 800 grams of Novita Miami in eight colours for 70 crocheted squares (13*13 cm each).

Tuubihuivi alpakasta / Alpaca Infinity Scarf

Lankakorin tyhjennys etenee - nyt oli alpakkalankojen vuoro. Loin 100 silmukkaa pyöröpuikoille 3.5 ja aloin neuloa oikeaa, raidottamalla jo tuotannosta poistunutta Novita Luxus Alpacaa (1.5 kerää tummanharmaata, 1.5 kerää harmaata) ja Hjertegarnin Vidal Alpacaa (3 kerää tummaa viininpunaista). Lopuksi yhdistin tekeleen renkaaksi silmukoimalla. Ihan kiva tuli: 22 * 139cm, menee kaksi kertaa kaulan ympäri.

Stash busting exercises continue - now it was time to get rid of alpaca yarns. I made 100 stitches on circular needles number 3.5 and started knitting in round. I made randomish stripes with Novita Luxus Alpaca (1.5 skeins of dark grey, 1.5 skeins of grey) and Hjertegarn Vidal Alpaca (3 skeins of dark wine red). In the end, I grafted the stitches together to make a round scarf. I like the end result: 22 * 139cm, can be wrapped around the neck twice.

Isoäidinneliöpeitto / Grandma Squares Blanket

Kaverin vauvalle - sain siihen menemään 99% Novitan 7 veljestä-varastoistani. Tuplajee!

For a friend's baby - I managed to use 99% of my Novita 7 veljestä stash. Double yeah!

Nyt on lapaset! / This is what I call mittens!

Löysin lankakoria siivotessani pieniä nöttösiä Ístexin Lett-lopia. En tiennyt mitä niistä voisi tehdä, mutta poiskaan en halunnut heittää. Islantilaisia Neuleita -kirjaa selaillessani sain ahaa-elämyksen: niistä tulee Handtak-lapaset.

When organising my yarn stash, I found small skeins of Ístex Lett-lopi in several colours. I had no idea what to make out of them, but I did not want to bin them either. As I was browsing through the Knitting with Icelandic Wool book, I realised the Lett-lopi should turn into Handtak mittens.

Tein lapaset pääpiirteittäin ohjeiden mukaan, tosin tein sormiosankin kuviollisena, jotta se on lämmin. Langat riittivät melkein identtisiin lapasiin. Lankaa meni paljon, koska lapaset neulottiin kaksinkertaisella lopilla. Lopputuloksena hauskat ja muhkeat talvivanttuut! Täytyy sanoa, että en ole koskaan neulonut näin lämpimiä lapasia. Ne lähtevät huomenna postin mukana Ouluun - pitäisi olla tarpeeksi lämpimät talvipyöräilyynkin :) (Sivuhuomio: lapaset ovat samankokoiset, kuvakulma vääristää)

I roughly followed the instructions, altough I made the fingertip part in two colours to make it warm. The yarns were enough for almost identical mittens. I used a lot of yars, since the mittens were knitted with double lopi. The end result is a fun and thick pair of winter handwear! I must admit, I have never knitted mittens this warm. I will post them to Oulu (in Northern Finland) tomorrow - they should be warm enough to be used when cycling in the winter, too! (Side remark: the mittens are the same size, the angle of the picture makes them look different)

Afrikakukkapeitto / African flower hexagon blanket

Se on valmis!!! Virkkauksessa meni kolme ja puoli kuukautta, mutta komea tuli! Kokonaisia kukkia on 270, puolikkaita 18. Viltin koko on 130 x 165cm. Vilttiin meni sukkalankojen jämälankoja eli Novitan 7 Veljestä noin 15 eri värissä. En ole punninnut vilttiä, joten en tiedä aivan tarkkaa langan menekkiä. Valkoista meni viimeiseen kierrokseen ja yhdistämiseen virkkaamalla 4.2 kerää ja oranssia toiseksi viimeiseen kierrokseen noin 1/3 kerää.

It is done! It took three and a half months to crochet but the end result is fabulous! The blanket consists of 270 full and 18 half flowers. It measures 130 x 165cm. I used Novita 7 Veljestä sock yarn ends in about fifteen colours. I have not weighed the blanket so I am not entirely sure about how much yarn I used. I do know that I used 4.2 skeins of white for the last round and joining the hexagons by crocheting and a third of a skein of orange for the penultimate round.

Tunisian crocheted oven mitt / Koukuttu patakinnas

My secret santa sent me Tunisian crochet hooks a couple of weeks ago, and this oven mitt is my first attempt at Tunisian crocheting. Quite much fun! I used the leftover Álafosslopi yarns from my cardigan, so the oven mitt is made of 100% wool. The texture is thick and solid: looks like the mitt will be able to take high temperatures.

Busting the yarn stash - funky socks

It is about time to use up the Novita 7 Veljestä stash that I have. Colourful & happy-patterned socks are perfect for this :) I am still far away from really busting the stash but this is a good start.

As I was knitting these socks, I used a couple of new techniques I have recently learned, namely Tunisian crochet and the French round heel. I used Tunisian crocheting in the heel flap and all the way through the heel reductions. The heel becomes quite rigid, but it should last even heavy use.

This is what happens when you have several little balls of the same yarn :D The trick with these socks is that the colour scheme is reversed.

Update: 12x17 pieces - now I have literally ran out of thread-ends! Luckily I was promised some more colourful little balls of yarn next week :)

As with all human action, I ended up with a pattern even though I tried to randomise the pieces. I see a clock-wise, widening, circular pattern evolving, starting from the black and brown piece.

Patchwork / Tilkkutäkki

My eternity project: started almost 2 years ago by knitting 10x10cm squares from the ends of threads and we're now at 12x11 squares.

The cool thing is that every square reminds me of a person who received a soft package from us - there are end bits of threads used for socks, gloves and other things. And a couple of squares were made by friends who re-discovered knitting :)
